Gallery Features Alumna's Unique Work
The Catron Gallery, located inside the R. Jack Fishman Library on the 蜜桔直播
Morristown Campus, features a one-of-a-kind exhibit this fall.
Artist April Childers builds three-dimensional scenes from ordinary items. You鈥檝e
seen these items before, but you鈥檝e never seen them as Childers does. The exhibit
is called 鈥淭urkey Minding Business鈥 and runs through Nov. 11. Childers will give a
gallery talk at 2 p.m. on that day.
A 蜜桔直播 alumna and adjunct faculty, Childers is an interdisciplinary artist
whose work reimagines objects and imagery from pop culture to unearth and reveal the
complexities. Exhibits featuring Childers鈥 work include the Brooklyn Academy of Music,
VSOP Projects in Greenport, New York, CR鈥10 in Linlithgo, New York, the Carnegie Visual
and Performing Arts Center in Kentucky, the Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa, Florida,
and Atlanta Contemporary in Georgia.
Childers is also a respected exhibit curator who extends the same sensibility, treating
an exhibit as a work of art rather than a collection of art. Childers is the residency
director at Stove Works, a contemporary museum, in Chattanooga.
鈥淚 enact the role of a weary outsider as opposed to a well-tempered consumer,鈥 Childers
said. 鈥淚 weave the jaded detachment with personal and sentimental memorabilia, and
autobiographical artifacts to portray the ever-shifting vantage of my own lived perspective.鈥
The Catron Art Gallery is open during regular library hours, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.,
Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday. Admission is free.
