New Noncredit Healthcare Courses Begin in July, August

Classes Include Phlebotomy Tech, CNA, CMA
ÃÛ½ÛÖ±²¥â€™s Division of Workforce Training will offer noncredit career courses
in clinical medical assistant, certified nursing assistant, phlebotomy technician,
registered dental assistant and medication aide-certified for CNAs and licensed occupational
therapy assistants.
Classes lead to optional state licensure or certification. Tuition has been discounted
for the fall semester. Noncredit scholarships or assistance from the American Job
Center may be available for qualified students.

Claiborne County Campus
• The Certified Nursing Aide course will meet Aug. 4-Oct. 20, Tuesdays and Thursdays,
5-10 p.m. This class includes 128.5 hours of training in the classroom, classroom
skill lab, and clinical training in a long-term health care facility. Proper techniques
for routine patient care are taught. This includes assisting with meals and exercise,
taking vital signs, assisting with personal hygiene, and reporting symptoms and signs
that may indicate illness. Students are required to perform sixteen hours of supervised
patient care in a long-term care facility. Graduates may register with the state.
The discounted cost for this program is $899.
• The Clinical Medical Assistant course will meet Nov. 3-April 15, Tuesdays and Thursdays,
6-9:30 p.m. This program trains students to assist physicians by performing some clinical
responsibilities in a medical office. This includes preparing patients for examination
and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects
of phlebotomy, and the cardiac life cycle. Students will also review phlebotomy, pharmacology,
medication administration, vital signs, professional workplace behavior, and ethical
and legal aspects of the healthcare field. Those who complete the class may take the
National Healthcareer Association certification exam. The discounted cost for this
class is $3,000.
• The Phlebotomy Technician course will be offered July 27-Oct. 5, Mondays and Wednesdays,
5:30-9 p.m. This class provides classroom and laboratory training in collecting blood.
This 70-hour program prepares students for careers in a variety of healthcare settings.
Forty successful venipunctures (needle sticks) in a clinical setting to take the National
Healthcareer Association certification exam. The certificate exam is recommended but
not required. The discounted cost for this course is $1,500.
Morristown Campus
• The Certified Nursing Aide course will meet Aug. 3-Oct. 6, Tuesdays and Thursdays,
4:30-9:30 p.m. This class includes 128.5 hours of training in the classroom, classroom
skill lab, and a long-term health care facility. Proper techniques for routine patient
care are taught. This includes assisting with meals and exercise, taking vital signs,
assisting with personal hygiene, and reporting symptoms and signs that may indicate

and Wednesdays from 5:30-9:30 p.m. This class provides classroom and laboratory training
in collecting blood, usually through the use of a needle. This 70-hour program prepares
students for careers in a variety of healthcare settings. Forty successful venipunctures

• The Registered Dental Assistant course will meet Aug. 10-Jan. 20, Mondays and Wednesdays,
6-9 p.m. The Tennessee Board of Dentistry has approved this 120-hour course. After
successful completion, students may register with the state as a registered dental
assistant. The class covers anatomy and physiology, tooth morphology, infection control,
and restorative dentistry. Students will also learn about the use of radiology in
the dental office. In addition to classwork, students will be required to provide
documentation of 30 additional hours of observation at a dental office. The discounted
tuition for this class is $2,250.
Niswonger Campus
• The Certified Nursing Aide will be Sept. 9-Nov. 24, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30-9:30
p.m. This class includes 128.5 hours of training in the classroom, classroom skill
lab, and a long-term health care facility. Proper techniques for routine patient care
are taught. This includes assisting with meals and exercise, taking vital signs, assisting
with personal hygiene, and reporting symptoms and signs that may indicate illness.

Sevier County Campus

and Wednesdays, 4:30-8 p.m. This program trains students to assist physicians by performing
some clinical responsibilities in a medical office. This includes preparing patients
for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing,
technical aspects of phlebotomy, and the cardiac life cycle. Students will also review
phlebotomy, pharmacology, medication administration, vital signs, professional workplace
behavior, and ethical and legal aspects of the healthcare field. Those who complete
the course may take the certification exam with the National Healthcareer Association.
The discounted cost for this class is $3,000.
• The Medication Aide-Certified course will meet Aug. 10-Sept. 19 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This is designed for certified nursing aides
and licensed occupational therapy assistants. Students learn how to administer medications
to patients in healthcare settings safely. Coursework covers effective communication
and interpersonal skills. Subjects covered include basic pharmacology, medical terminology,
medication administration and the fundamentals of body systems. This class adheres
to the Tennessee Board of Nursing Medication Aide training requirements. Students
are required to complete 20 clinical hours. The discounted cost is $999.
