Stevens Honored for Teaching, Developing Certificate
Dr. Robert E. Pratt II, dean of the Division of Humanities, left, congratulations Dr. Erika Stevens, professor of Spanish.

Dr. Erika Stevens, professor of Spanish at 蜜桔直播, has received the Distance Learning Teaching Award for Higher Education from the American Council of Teachers of Foreign (World) Languages.

Stevens鈥 recognition stems from her creation of the academic certificate in Spanish offered 蜜桔直播. The program attracts both current students and students who are not otherwise affiliated with the college.

鈥淭his certificate expands the role of learning languages at a community college,鈥 Stevens said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e had people with bachelor鈥檚 or master鈥檚 degree enroll in this program. These are people in the community who need to speak Spanish for their roles in health care, law enforcement, hospitality and other fields.鈥

The program can be taken completely online. Stevens said modern technology allows students to speak with the teacher and with other classmates.

鈥淭he certificate also has a program where students learning Spanish can with native Spanish speakers who are learning English,鈥 she also said. 鈥淭his program has enhanced security and those you鈥檙e speaking won鈥檛 know anything but your first name.鈥

As part of the award, Stevens will teach a webinar for the organization鈥檚 members in April. The title of her presentation is 鈥淒esigning Online World Language Courses to Meet the Needs of Students and the Community.鈥

Stevens received the award at the group鈥檚 cannula convention in Philadelphia.
